WALLA WALLA, Wash. – The Whitman College women's soccer team continued a busy week of Northwest Conference action looking to rebound from back-to-back losses over the weekend but came up empty in a 3-0 defeat to Whitworth on Wednesday night at the Whitman Athletics Fields.
Hannah Rose scored the first and third goals for the Pirates, the second on a shot over Blues (3-11-1, 3-9 NWC) keeper
Allie Seracuse's head in the 87
th minute to seal the match. The goal came less than 10 minutes after Brixiada Mendoza scored off a rebound to put Whitworth (8-4-3, 6-3-2 NWC) up 2-0.
Seracuse made five saves in the losing effort with Pirate keeper Molly Webster posting four before being spelled in the 82
nd minute by Isabelle Arends.
Whitworth had a majority of the possession in the first half but stout play in the Whitman backline kept the chances on goal to a minimum.
Rae opened the scoring for the Pirates in the 34
th minute. She cut in to the top of the penalty area from the left flank and gave Seracuse no chance when she ripped a shot into the upper right corner.
There was little play in front of the Pirate net until the later stages of the first half. Jordon O'Roy and
Camille Marshall both had bids on goal within minutes of each other but couldn't find the back of the net.
The second half saw a much more physical game and more possession by Whitman with O'Roy getting the best chance for the Blues. She volleyed a service just outside the six-yard box but Webster made a point blank save to keep her scoresheet clean.
The Blues have only one day in between games, next visiting Pacific this Friday, Oct. 19 for a 6:00 p.m. kickoff.
