TACOMA, Wash. –
Codie Conching was one kill shy of a double double with nine kills and 14 digs but it couldn't stop a 25-19, 25-14, 25-18 sweep at the hands of Pacific Lutheran in Northwest Conference action Friday night.
Rebecca Hall and
Claire McCarthy both chipped in with team-highs of three blocks and 16 digs, respectively. Hall also contributed 11 digs for an overall solid defensive effort.
Danielle Skibiel had the high mark for the Lutes (18-3, 11-2 NWC) in kills (11) and blocks (6) while Caylie Shiramizu added a match-high 28 digs.
The opening set featured a competitive contest until a 7-1 PLU run did the Blues (8-13, 4-9 NWC) in. Kills from Conching and
Brooke Randall helped Whitman to a one-point lead midway through the set, but Shiramizu capped her team's run with back-to-back aces to put the Lutes up 18-11.
PLU grabbed an early lead in set two and never looked back. A plethora of Lutes got in on the action and after consecutive kills from McKenzie Pfeiffer they led 14-7. A McCarthy kill shaved the lead to three points but PLU went on an 8-0 run to close the set.
Seven straight points early in set three put PLU in position for the sweep. The Blues remained in striking distance late in the set but it was ultimately the Lutes who walked away with the win and sweep.
Whitman is back in action Saturday at Puget Sound. First serve is set for 7:00 p.m.
