Women's Volleyball Staves Off Rally, Stuns Whitworth in Five Sets

WALLA WALLA, Wash. - Sierra Myers posted a career-high 13 blocks, Megan Henry and Brooke Randall added eight more and the Whitman College women's volleyball team pulled off a stunning upset over Whitworth with a thrilling five-set win in Northwest Conference action Wednesday night at the Sherwood Center. Set scores were 25-23, 25-16, 17-25, 22-25, 15-10.

It was a block party for the Blues (9-14, 5-10 NWC) to say the least who dominated in that department to the tune of a 40-18 advantage. Cali Anderson led the Whitman attack with a team-high 13 kills and five different players had double figures in digs led by Claire McCarthy who shared match-high honors with 16.

Jessica Schmautz provided the offense for Whitworth (18-8, 12-3 NWC), drilling a match-high 20 kills to go along with 11 digs for the double double. Lauren Budde has a team-best six blocks with Erin White posting 16 digs.

The early points of the opening set had the Blues overmatched by the Pirates but they would rally and grab their first lead after block assists from Kalli Dickey and Myers capped a 5-0 run. The teams would trade points until a 3-0 spurt by Whitworth turned a one-point Blues lead into a two-point deficit. Down the stretch, kills from Codie Conching and Anderson reversed the tide and lifted Whitman to the one-set lead.

The Blues retained their momentum heading into the second set, taking an early lead 7-3 lead off a Brooke Randall kill. The run continued with Whitman going up by nine points off a Myers ace. Schmautz drilled a pair of kills to shave the lead to four points but a monster double block from Randall and Anderson pushed the lead to 18-12. Whitman would never let up and cruised to the set two win.

Whitworth came out of the locker room a different team, storming back to take sets three and four and push the match to a deciding fifth set. The Pirates led most of the way in set three and took an 18-12 lead off an Emiko Kahler kill. The Blues would rally but Madison Douglas caught fire down the stretch, drilling a trio of kills to close the set and give the Pirates life.

Whitworth opened up a 6-1 lead in set three kickstarted by consecutive kills from Kahler. The Blues rallied, chipping away until a Myers kill tied the score at 19-19. Whitworth took over from there with four straight points and eventually grabbing the win and pushing the match to a fifth and deciding set.

Set five saw the Blues erase an early deficit with five straight points to go up 7-4. Undaunted, the Pirates rallied and evened the score at 8-8 on a Budde kill. Whitman would take control from there with Myers getting two of her teams last three points off blocks, including the match-clincher, to nail down the win.

The Blues will have a short turnaround before hosting Linfield for their season finale on Friday, Nov.  2 at 7:00 p.m. Prior to the match Whitman will honor seniors Conching, Randall, Henry and Myers.
