Blues Take Down Texas-Tyler, 74-62

SPOKANE, Wash. - The Whitman College women's basketball team notched its first win away from the the Sherwood Center this season, topping the University of Texas-Tyler 74-62 in the opening game of the Whit Classic on Friday at Whitworth Fieldhouse.

Blues (2-1) forward Makana Stone led all scorers with 24 points on a blistering 10-14 from the field also adding 10 rebounds for her second double double of the season. Mady Burdett and Kaelan Shamseldin added 12 points and shot 4-9 from distance.

Tyreesha Blaylock led the Patriots (0-2) with 10 points and five rebounds. Carissa Spiker added nine points and five boards of her own.

The Blues set the tone in the first quarter, reeling off 11 straight points late in the period to grab a 19-7 lead. Kaylie McCracken got it started with a bucket in the paint and Shamseldin capped the spurt with a three pointer. Whitman would lead 21-13 heading into the second quarter.

Whitman built on its momentum in the second and went on a 16-2 run spearheaded by back-to-back Shamseldin three-pointers. Stone's bucket gave her team its biggest lead of the game of 24 points and the Blues entered halftime up 45-23.

The Patriots kept within striking distance though and trailed by only 14 points after a Blaylock three pointer with 4:10 remaining in the third quarter. A Burdett three pointer and a Maegen Martin layup regained the momentum for the Blues who pushed the lead back over 20 points and never looked back.

The Blues are back at it tomorrow for their final game of the Classic, facing Montana Tech for a 5:00 p.m. tip.
