Blues Rally From Two Sets Down, Top George Fox

NEWBERG, Ore. - Kalli Dickey posted 17 kills, Claire McCarthy added a team-high 25 digs and the Whitman College women's volleyball team rallied from two sets down to outlast George Fox University Saturday night in Northwest Conference action at Wheeler Sports Center. Set scores were 16-25, 23-25, 27-25, 25-21, 15-6.

Dickey, who hit an impressive .318 on the evening, added 12 digs with Codie Conching also recording a double double with 12 kills and 24 digs. The match was the third five-setter in the last four matches and evens the Blues' league record to 2-2 and 6-6 overall.

Danyle Dupray delivered a match-high 18 kills for the Bruins (6-6, 0-4 NWC) to go along with 16 digs and Sophia Lawrence was superior in the back row for the Bruins with a match-high 39 digs.

After dropping the first two sets, a sweep appeared imminent after George Fox took a 10-4 set three lead. A pair of kills from Conching and kills from Dickey and Megan Henry (9 kills, 3 blks) helped the Blues storm back and take a 13-12 lead. The run continued but Dupray caught fire late, drilling a trio of kills to cut the lead to one point. The set would see two ties down the stretch before Whitman grabbed the win to stay alive in the match.

The Blues pushed the match to a deciding frame with their set four win, jumping on the Bruins early and holding them off late. A pair of Dickey kills along with a kill and a block from Sierra Myers gave their team an 8-1 lead. Whitman continued to lead until a late run, capped by an Alyssa Burch kill, tied the score at 18-18. The Blues regained the lead and eventually pulled off the win on back-to-back aces from McCarthy.

Set five was the Kalli Dickey show early whose four kills accounted for her half of her team's first eight points. Whitman grabbed an 8-2 lead and never looked back to step back into the thick of the conference standings.

Whitman returns home for a pair of league matches next weekend, first against Pacific Lutheran on Friday, Sept. 28 at 7:00 p.m.
