WALLA WALLA, Wash. –
Claire McCarthy had a match-high 19 digs,
Codie Conching added 14 digs and eight kills, and
Sierra Myers recorded six kills and four blocks for the Whitman College women's volleyball team but it would come in a 25-18, 25-17, 25-21 sweep to Pacific Lutheran in Northwest Conference action Friday night at the Sherwood Athletics Center.
Â
PLU's Caylie Shiramizu had a team-high 17 digs and was helped out by Isabella Zubrod, who notched 17 assists and eight kills on the night.
Â
The Blues got off to a hot start in the first set until the Lutes (12-1, 4-4 NWC) found their momentum, widening their lead and forcing the Blues to call two quick timeouts. Conching and Myers provided huge kills for the Blues, who were unable to complete their comeback as they drop the first set 25-18.
Miscommunication by the Blues (6-7, 2-3 NWC) mixed with a Lutes scoring surge put Whitman down eight points early on in the second set. Conching and
Kalli Dickey excited the crowd with huge kills, but it wasn't enough as PLU took the second set 25-17.
Â
The third set proved to be a formality as the Blues couldn't muster enough energy to hold off the conference leading Lutes, as the Blues dropped set three 25-21.
Â
The Blues look to even their conference record Saturday night as they host UPS at the Sherwood Athletics Center at 5:00 p.m.
