No. 4 Men's Basketball Blows Out Pios In NWC Road Opener

PORTLAND, Ore. - The No. 4 Whitman College men's basketball team ushered in the new year with a bang, recording its largest margin of victory and shooting a blistering 53% in three pointers for a 117-52 win over Lewis & Clark in the team's Northwest Conference road opener on Saturday at Bart Valentine Court.

The win sets the stage for next week's showdown in Spokane when conference and national rivals Whitman and Whitworth square off in a matchup of two of the country's top teams.

The Blues (11-1, 3-0 NWC) spread the offensive wealth as five Whitman players scored in double figures headlined by a game and season-high 23 points from Andrew Vickers. Joey Hewitt was 4-7 from beyond the arc for 16 points, Darne Duckett chipped in 13 points on 5-9 from the floor and Ben Beattie was one point shy of a double double, scoring nine points and corralling a game-high 11 rebounds.

Daelon Floyd posted team highs of 15 points and five rebounds for the Pios with Zeke Crawford contributing 10 points and four rebounds.

It was Whitman's pressure defense that led to quick offense. The Blues recorded a season-high 23 steals translating into 44 points off turnovers. By comparison, Lewis & Clark cashed in only six points off Whitman's miscues. The Blues won the turnover battle by a wide margin at 32-15.

Whitman grabbed a sizeable lead right from the opening tip. Three pointers from Jack Stewart, Hewitt and Michael Gutierrez accounted for their team's first nine points. Later a 13-2 run lifted the Blues to a 24-6 lead a little past the quarter mark of the first half. The lead tinkered around 20 points for much of the remainder of the first half before three pointers from Vickers and Trevor Osborne gave the Blues a 26-point cushion heading into the break.

Whitman outscored the Pios by 39 points in the second half to win going away. The Blues introduced a 13-2 run to open the period and never looked back. They finished the hot night from the floor shooting north of 50% while dominating the glass to the tune of a 46-31 rebounding advantage.

Tipoff versus the Pirates is set Tuesday, Jan. 8 at 8:00 p.m.
