Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

No. 4 Men's Basketball Outduels No. 7 Whitworth In Heavyweight Battle

SPOKANE, Wash. - It was an as-advertised affair as two of the nation's top teams squared off, both scratching and clawing for conference and national supremacy. Darne Duckett's 19 points on a scorching 4-5 in three pointers and pressure defense at the opportune times proved to be the difference as the No. 4 Whitman College men's basketball team took down No. 7 Whitworth 100-98 on Tuesday in front of a raucous Whitworth Fieldhouse crowd.

The win keeps the Blues (12-1, 4-0 NWC) with a share of the top of the Northwest Conference standings. Andrew Vickers dribble-drived his way to 18 points and Joey Hewitt and Austin Butler both added 15 points. Vickers also added a team-best seven rebounds.

Ben College had a monster game for the Pirates with a game-high 28 points on 8-14 shooting with Jared Christy a menace on the boards to the tune of 15 rebounds while adding 11 points for the double double.

The intensity was high from the opening tip with both teams evenly battling on both ends of the court. The Pirates would slowly build a cushion as a Kevin Crosno three pointer put his team up 24-16 with 13:01 to play until halftime. The Blues battled back and evened the game on a Vickers layup. Vickers continued to heat up, hitting a pair of free throws before a late layup gave Whitman a 52-47 lead at the break.

The Blues looked to get to the hoop early in the second half. Driving layups from Butler and Hewitt lifted their team to its largest lead at that point of 10 points. Whitman continued to attack the paint, creating open space on the perimeter as Trevor Osborne drained a corner three pointer, forcing a Whitworth timeout after building its lead to 71-61.

The three pointers would keep falling and the Blues kept balling as the double digit lead continued to stand. Duckett's hot shooting bolstered the lead to as many as 13 points but that certainly wasn't the end of the story.

The Pirates worked the lead back under double digits and navigated themselves back into the game, taking advantage of Butler's absence who picked up his fifth foul with just over five minutes to play. Kyle Roach's layup cut the lead to 85-80 just inside of eight minutes to play then another bucket of his brought the score to 94-90. College's three ball would later snatch the lead from the Blues and give Whitworth a 96-95 lead with 2:35 to play. Down the stretch though it were key baskets from Vickers and Cedric Jacobs-Jones that regained and kept the lead for the Blues who walked away with the win.

Next up for the Blues is a matchup at Linfield on Friday, Jan. 11. Tipoff is set for 8:00 p.m.
