Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Women's Basketball Takes Down Pios In NWC Road Opener

PORTLAND, Ore. - Mady Burdett scored a game-high 16 points, Maegen Martin nearly posted a double double with 11 points and nine rebounds and the Whitman College women's basketball team kicked off the new year with a dominant 77-46 win at Lewis & Clark in Northwest Conference action on Saturday night.

The Blues forced the Pios (2-11, 1-3 NWC) into 20 turnovers, turning them into a 23-6 advantage in points off turnovers. Brittaney Van Buren had a career evening with career highs of 12 points and eight rebounds and Makana Stone added 13 points and five rebounds.

Burdett added four assists and six rebounds to her impressive stat line. For the game, Whitman (9-3, 3-0 NWC) finished with a 12-2 advantage in fast break points.

Lewis & Clark's Delsie Johnson led the Pio effort, posting a double double with a shared game-high 16 points and 10 rebounds. Janessa Willie added six points and six rebounds.

The result was never in doubt as the Blues opened the game on a 17-3 run, holding the Pios to without a field goal until the later part of the quarter. Stone was active early, dominating in the paint to the tune of 10 of her team's points during that stretch.

Lewis & Clark's first couple of baskets came from three pointers by Alyx Crager and Sara Hogman to bring the score to 22-9 but that did little to slow Whitman's pace. The lead would swell to 20 points as back-to-back buckets from Lily Gustafson along with a Burdett jumper lifted the score to 34-14 with 6:18 to go before halftime.

After twice holding first half leads of as many as 29 points, the second half proved to be a formality as the Blues kept their foot on the pedal and coasted to the win. A three pointer from Burdett gave her team its largest lead to that point of 32 points midway through the third quarter and the Blues never looked back.

The Blues next travel to Spokane and a showdown with conference rival Whitworth. Tipoff versus the Pirates is set Tuesday, Jan. 8 at 5:00 p.m.
