Women's Basketball Takes Down Whitworth, 91-86

SPOKANE, Wash. - Makana Stone impressed with 21 points and 17 rebounds, Kaelan Shamseldin added 20 more on 5-8 from beyond the arc and the Whitman College women's basketball team took down Whitworth 91-86 in Northwest Conference action Tuesday night at Whitworth Fieldhouse.

Taylor Chambers add 11 points and a game-high six assists with a total of six Blues (10-3, 4-0 NWC) scoring in double figures. Stone did her damage on 9-15 shooting from the floor with her 17 rebounds a season high.

Camy Aguinaldo led the Pirate effort with a team-high 20 points and Jordon Smith added 17 points on 5-9 shooting in three pointers. The loss drops Whitworth to 8-5 overall and 3-1 in the NWC.

The Blues got off to a hot start, jumping out to a 9-4 lead after Stone's bucket with 4:30 to play in the first quarter. The Pirates would cut into the lead and shave the deficit to two points by quarter's end. Aguinaldo's three pointer followed by Smith's bucket ended the quarter scoreline to 14-12.

Both teams went toe-to-toe with each other in the second period before the Pirates carried a 35-32 lead into halftime. Shameseldin's three pointer and fast break bucket kept the Blues with a three point lead. The teams would trade buckets until Shamseldin drilled a three pointer to regain the lead for the Blues, but a pair of three balls down the stretch from Jordan Smith give Whitworth the three point lead at the break.

The Blues flipped the script in the third quarter. After falling behind five points on a Smith three ball, Whitman battled back and tied the game at 54-54 off a Stone layup with three minutes to play. The Blues kept it rolling, reeling off nine unanswered points to take a 63-54 lead with just over a minute to play and carring a four-point lead into the final period.

The fourth quarter would be tight as well but the Blues never relinquished the lead. Aguinaldo's bucket with 1:07 to play cut the advantage to two points, but Whitman was steady down the stretch, protecting the ball and hitting its free throws

Next up for the Blues is a matchup at Linfield on Friday, Jan. 11. Tipoff is set for 6:00 p.m.
