Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Blues Fall In Four Sets To George Fox

WALLA WALLA, Wash. - Elyse Benavides and Christina Boxberger posted a team-high 10 kills but it wasn't enough as the Whitman College women's volleyball team fell in four sets to George Fox, Saturday in Northwest Conference action at the Sherwood Center. Set scores were 26-24, 22-25, 25-10, 25-14.

The Bruins hit just .160 for the match but dominated at the net defensively. They out-blocked the Blues 17-3 and forced Whitman to hit just .066 for the match. Tate Cadang recorded a match-high 18 digs with Claire McCarthy adding 14 more and Ruby Matthews contributing a pair of blocks.

Bailey LeBreton delivered a match-high 13 kills for the Bruins to go along with six blocks and five digs. Ashtyn Butler added 12 kills, nine digs and four blocks.

The Blues won set two but could have found themselves up two sets and eyeing a sweep. Whitman was dominant in the opening frame and led 10-4 after a Taylor Knight kill. The Bruins rallied and, after a late 5-0 run, led 20-16. Nearly out of the set trailing 23-18, Whitman reeled off four straight but came no closer.

Whitman responded in set two to even the match despite facing a 15-9 deficit. The tides then shifted drastically as a pair of Knight kills spearheaded an 8-0 run to put the Blues up three points. George Fox didn't fold but the Blues went on to close out the win.

Sets three and four were a different and one-sided story. The Blues combined for only 24 points between them as the Bruins cruised to two wins to clinch the match.

Whitman continues its home stand next Friday, Oct. 18 against Puget Sound at 7:00 p.m.
