Women's Soccer Drops Overtime Heartbreaker To Willamette

WALLA WALLA, Wash. - The Whitman women's soccer team squared off with one of the conference's elite teams but came up just shy of a result. The Blues battled all game long but fell 1-0 in overtime to Willamette, Sunday in Northwest Conference play at the Whitman Athletic Complex.

It was the second 1-0 loss of the weekend, this coming in more frustrating fashion. The Bearcats (6-4-1, 5-1-1 NWC) earned a free kick about 40 yards from the Whitman net in the 94th minute. Rachel Moulton drove the ball into the penalty area which Emma Blackburn ran on to and finished with a header past Allie Seracuse.

Both teams had excellent chances during regulation to find the back of the net. Willamette hit Whitman's crossbar three times and Pagan Hetherington and Sofia Ellington both saw breakaway chances thwarted by Bearcat keeper Kristen Barclay.

Allie Seracuse made two saves in net for the Blues (1-10, 1-6 NWC) and Barclay posted eight on the afternoon for Willamette.

Seracuse was called into action early. She saved a well struck shot to the near post just under 10 minutes into the game and came off her line numerous times to clear balls out of her attacking third.

Nearly midway through the first half the Blues had arguably their best chance. Hetherington was slipped a ball behind the center of the Bearcat defense. She collected the pass but her shot was unable to beat Barclay.

Willamette nearly put one in in the 62nd minute when Seracuse's clear attempt deflected to the top of the box and the ensuing Bearcat attempt on net bounced off the top of the crossbar.

Despite Willamette's dangerous chances on goal, the Blues finished the game with a 14-8 shot advantage.

The Blues continue their homestand next weekend with matches against Puget Sound (Saturday) and Pacific Lutheran (Sunday).
