FOREST GROVE, Ore. - Late inning heroics - and disappointment - have been the story of Whitman's young season, and Saturday's midday contest proved to be no different.
Jake Wishart (1 H, 2 RBI) delivered a two-run triple in the ninth inning to break a tie game and pace the Whitman College baseball team to a 6-4 win, Saturday in game three of the NWC Round Robin.
The Blues (3-4) trailed by a pair of runs heading into the top of the ninth but quickly got action on the basepaths after Jerick Nomura (1 H, 1 R) and Lucas Thrun singled to open the inning. Later, Kyle Reisman's base hit advanced the runners before David Johnson (1 H, 1 R, 2 RBI) drove home the game-tying runs with a base hit of his own. That set the stage for Wishart's triple that cleared the bases to put the Blues ahead for good.
Collin Anderson (1-1) regrouped from Saturday's loss to pitch one and a third innings of scoreless relief for the win. Milo Mincin tossed a perfect ninth for his first save of the season. Brett Williams batted 2-4 with a run scored with Thrun adding two hits and an RBI from a sac fly for Whitman's first run.
Starter Matthew Sox pitched six and two-thirds innings, allowing three earned runs on nine hits with six strikeouts. It was anything but a dominant performance but Sox would never let any inning get away from him, keeping any Pio damage to no more than a single run in any inning.
Cooper Larson led Lewis & Clark batting 3-5 including a double to go along with three runs scored. Sam Helms and Zack Kon both recorded two hits with Helms adding an RBI and a run scored.
The Blues twice rallied from a run down in the first four innings. Thrun's sacrifice fly along with Tyler Lewis scoring an unearned run on an Andrew Yarek passed ball made it a 2-2 game through four innings. Lewis & Clark would later go up 4-2 off an unearned run in the fifth inning and a Cole Petters RBI single in the seventh inning.
Yarek tossed seven strong innings in not factoring in the decision, allowing one earned run on four hits with five strikeouts. Nat Richman (0-1) would be the pitcher of record for the Pios.
The Blues close the tournament this afternoon against Puget Sound.
