WALLA WALLA, Wash. - After stellar regular seasons, both the Whitman College men's and women's basketball teams earned the right to host the opening round of the 2019 Northwest Conference Tournament. The top-seeded men and second-seeded women both welcome the University of Puget Sound to the Sherwood Center for a NWC semifinal double header set for Thursday, Feb. 21. The women's game will tip off at 6:00 p.m. with the men's matchup set for 8:00 p.m.
The 25th-ranked Blues women (19-6), despite finishing with league's second best record, will be looking for their first win this season over the third-seeded Loggers (19-5). Whitman lost both regular season matchups and hope to atone for the defeats when it matters most. Both teams entered Saturday's final day of league competition tied in the standings but after a Whitman win and UPS loss, the Blues grabbed the tournament's second seed and the accompanying home court advantage.
The Blues, in and out of the Top 25 all season long, come in with both inside and outside threats. Junior sharpshooter Mady Burdett leads the NWC in three point shooting (47.3%) and is fifth in overall scoring (15.3 ppg). Maegen Martin and Makana Stone have been threats all season in the paint, shooting 55.8% and 51.4%, respectively, ranking them 1-2 in the NWC in that category.
The men's team (24-1), ranked No. 2 nationally, has put together a string of recent excellence previously unseen by the Northwest Conference. Whitman is fresh off its third straight undefeated league season but will look to atone for a devastating home loss to Whitworth in last season's NWC Tournament final. Whitman dominated the Loggers (12-13) at the Sherwood Center nearly one month ago but found itself in a dogfight at UPS last week before grinding out the road win by eight points.
The Blues offense continues to be a force to be reckoned with. Whitman ranks third in the nation in scoring (105 ppg) and have overwhelmed opponents by the nation's best average margin of victory of 24.5 points per game. The offense has been sparked by an intense defensive press that has resulted in 340 steals which ranks No. 2 nationally. Three point threats Trevor Osborne and Jack Stewart will be on display along with the defensive (and scoring) prowess of Joey Hewitt. Hewitt leads the NWC in steals per game (2.1). Osborne (51.8%) and Stewart (47.6%) rank No. 3 and No. 11, respectively in three point shooting percentage.
