Blues Drop Cactus Classic Finale To Chapman

TUCSON, Ariz. - Lucas Thrun finished an excellent opening weekend, hitting 2-4 with one run and one RBI but it wasn't enough as the Whitman College baseball team closed the Cactus Classic with an 8-5 loss to Chapman on Saturday afternoon.

Blues starter Matthew Sox (0-1) battled through seven complete innings, allowing three earned runs on 12 hits with four strikeouts. Riley Glenn (1-0) earned the win in five complete innings of relief work, giving up two runs on five hits with five strikeouts.

The game was ultimately decided in the eighth inning when Chapman broke a 5-5 tie and put three on the board to complete the scoring. Henry Zeisler's RBI triple was the big hit of the inning and proved to be the dagger.

The game truly was a back-and-forth affair. After Gregerson put Chapman up in their first at bats, Thrun's RBI tied the game heading to the second.

Whitman then plated two in the third after Jake Wishart scored on a wild pitch before Kevin Nakamura's base hit drove in Thrun from second to put the Blues up 3-1. Chapman rallied to even the game, manufacturing a pair of runs from a bases loaded balk and a sacrifice fly from Cebedo.

The Blues bolted back out in front to take a 5-3 lead after a pair of sixth-inning runs. Tyler Lewis drove home Kyle Reisman with a run-scoring double then scored on an RBI hit from Cole Edwards.

The lead would be short-lived however as the Panthers plated two just one-half inning later, then put another three on the scoreboard in the eighth inning.

The Blues are next in action Saturday, Feb. 16 for the 2018 NWC Round Robin. First up in the two-day, four-game set will be Lewis & Clark. Games will be played in both McMinnville, Ore. and Forest Grove, Ore.
