Baseball Rallies But Falls Short To Redlands In 10 Innings

TUCSON, Ariz. - Tough losses are said to build character in a team. If that's true, today would be one of those defeats for the Whitman College baseball team. The Blues rallied from four runs down to take a one-run lead in extra innings, but saw Redlands plate two in the bottom of the 10th to fall 9-8 on Saturday at the Kino Sports Complex in game three of the Cactus Classic.

Lucas Thrun had three hits and two RBI, the last of each coming in the 10th inning to give the Blues (2-1) an 8-7 lead. Brett Williams posted three hits and two runs with Kevin Nakamura adding three hits of his own to go along with one run and an RBI.

Charlie Carmichael (0-1) was tagged with the loss in four and one-third innings of relief. On the hook for two runners in the 10th inning, he was spelled for Milo Mincin who got his first hitter to fly out but would give up the game-winning two-run hit two hitters later. Payton Walsh's single drove in two runs for the walk off hit.

Cal Bridges (1-1) was the pitcher of record for the Bulldogs, tossing the final three innings and giving up two runs on three hits. Redlands saw 10 different hitters with base hits led by Chris Hardin's two-hit, one-run, one-RBI performance.

The Bulldogs scored two runs in each of the first three innings. After taking a 2-0 lead off an Aaron Singh RBI-triple in the first, the Blues responded with three runs one-half inning later to take a one-run lead. Alex Behrman drove in David Johnson (2 H, 2 R) for the inning's first run and then later scored.

The Blues would score one run each in the fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth innings to chip away at what was a 7-3 Bulldog lead through four innings. Thrun drove home Johnson with a base hit in the sixth, then Johnson doubled and scored one inning later. The Blues evened the game up on a Nakamura RBI hit in the eighth.

Thrun's RBI gave the Blues its first lead since the second inning, but it would be short-lived with Redlands walking off with the win one-half inning later.

The Blues close the Classic this afternoon against Chapman University. First pitch is set for 2:00 p.m. MT.
