Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

Blues Fall To Worcester State For Season's First Loss

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Sage Ali continued her strong play with four goals and one assist, but it couldn't overcome an early hole as the Whitman College women's lacrosse team suffered its first loss, a 14-7 defeat by Worcester State, Sunday at Washburn Field.

The Blues (2-1) trailed 8-0 before netting their first goal with 47 seconds left in the first half. Whitman trailed by as many as 10 goals with just under 10 minutes to play in the second half before making a too-little-too-late rally for the eventual seven-goal loss.

Piper Spencer started and played 4:36 minutes into the second half before being spelled for Anna Cadigan who played in between the pipes the rest of the way. Spencer posted eight saves with Cadigan turning away four Lancer shots. Chloe O'Brien recorded four saves for the win in a full 60 minutes of action.

Isabel Regonini scored a goal and added an assist for Whitman with Katie Hinnen scooping up a team-high five groundballs. Ellie Teare added three groundballs and a team-best three caused turnovers.

The Lancers had a fairly even distribution of goal scorers led by Kelly Austin's four scores while tallying one assist. Austin, Ann Maher and Madison Brennan all scored a pair of goals in the first half to help Worcester State to the big halftime lead.

Whitman played the Lancers even in the second half with both teams netting six goals. Ali scored her team's first goal of the second 30 minutes then assisted on the next to help the Blues remain in striking distance at 11-3. Abby Magnuson would later score to push the Worcester State lead to double digits with Ali netting three more within the final 10 minutes of play.

Whitman remains in Colorado Springs for one more match. The Blues take on Illinois Wesleyan this Wednesday, March 13 at 12:00 p.m. MT (11:00 a.m. PT).
