Johnson Crushes Two Homeruns, Blues Top Occidental

LOS ANGELES - David Johnson delivered a three-run homer in the first inning, then belted a grand slam in the fourth to lift the Whitman College baseball team to a 12-5 win at Occidental in the team's finale of the California Classic on Saturday.

Saying Johnson had himself a day would be a complete understatement. His three bombs proved to be the difference in the seven-run Blues (9-9) win over a formidable Occidental (12-3) squad.

Jerick Nomura (2 H, 2 R, 1 RBI) put the Blues on the board in the first inning with his run-scoring double. Then after Kevin Nakamura (2 R) later reached on an error to put runners at the corners, Johnson went yard to put Whitman up 5-0.

The Blues all but put the game away with seven runs in the fourth inning. Kyle Reisman's RBI hit put the Blues up 6-1 before Nakamura was awarded first base after being hit by a Bryce Coyne pitch to load the bases.

Cade Denyer came on in relief but had an unpleasant welcome to the game as Johnson, with the count full, cleared the bases with one shot to put the Blues up 11-1.

Meanwhile, Matthew Sox (1-0) was navigating through the Tiger order. Sox recorded 10 strikeouts while scattering six hits over six innings and allowing a run in the third and another in the sixth. After Jake Larson ran into trouble in the seventh, Milo Mincin came on to toss a scoreless eighth and ninth inning.

Tiger starter Justin Hirschberg (0-1) was tagged with the loss in two innings of work. He battled through the first and second innings and allowed four runs on five hits. Bryan Smith and Michael Ingram both had two hits with Smith posting an RBI and Ingram adding a run.

Whitman returns to Northwest Conference play this weekend. The Blues open up a three-game series at Pacific (Ore.) beginning with a doubleheader on Saturday, March 16 at 12:00 p.m.
