3/18/2019 6:40:00 PM

CLAREMONT, Calif. - The Whitman College men's tennis team opened up its second week of spring break play with a non-conference matchup at Pomona-Pitzer, but came up short in an 8-1 loss to the Sagehens on Friday.

The Blues saw their four-game winning streak snapped to fall to 5-7 while Pomona-Pitzer improved to 7-6.

Whitman had a shot of making a game of it heading to singles play. Andreas Mueller-Immergluck and Alex Hwang lost at first doubles before a narrow 8-6 defeat at the three from Jacob Strabo and Ben Kirsh put the Blues in an 0-2 hole. On the the No. 2 court, the tandem of Adam Rapoport and Rajul Chikkalingaiah got the Blues back into the match, winning 8-6 over the Sagehen pair of Octove Bellet de Giacomoni and Josh Gearou.

Pomona-Pitzer would end the match quickly with sweeps in the first three matches to finish. Strabo's 6-2, 6-2 loss to Avery Bicks at six singles would be the match clincher.

A pair of matches went the full three sets but ultimately concluded with Sagehen wins. Kirsh rallied from a set down on the No. 1 court but fell to Jed Kronenberg 3-6, 6-3, 2-6. Mueller-Immergluck went up a set in his four singles match but would suffer a 4-6, 6-1, 6-4 defeat.

Whitman remains in Claremont one more day, taking on Bowdoin College on Tuesday in a neutral site match set for 5:00 p.m.
