Blues Split NWC Twinbill At George Fox

NEWBERG, Ore. - The Whitman College baseball team returned to the road today, opening its Northwest Conference series at George Fox with a twinbill split. Whitman won the opener 4-2 but were outdone by the arm of Landon Schirer in a 9-0 game two loss.

Game 1
The opener saw Travis Craven (2-4) toss seven scoreless innings for the 4-2 win, allowing no hits while issuing just two bases on balls and posting six strikeouts. Tristan Kalnins came in to pitch the eighth and ninth innings, allowing two runs before picking up his first save of the season.

Christopher Stone (5-3) was tagged with the loss for the Bruins, also working seven complete innings. Lifted after the seventh inning, he surrendered three earned runs on eight hits with seven strikeouts.

Brett Williams was the game's top hitter with a 3-5 performance. Jake Wishart and Kevin Nakamura both had one hit, one run and drove in a run with Matthew Sox adding an RBI hit to cap the big fifth inning.

The Blues did nearly all their damage with their three fifth-inning runs. The first five Whitman hitters reached base, four coming from base hits and two of the RBI variety. The damage could have been bigger if not for Lucas Thrun grounding into an inning-ending double play.

George Fox made a game of it with a pair of runs in the eighth inning. RBI hits from Matt Ramirez (1 H, 1 RBI) and Sam Swenson (2 H, 1 RBI) scored a pair of unearned runs to slice what was then a four-run Whitman lead in half. Kalnins would pitch a perfect ninth to seal the win.

Game 2
George Fox responded with a 9-0 win in the second game of the twinbill. Eric Ma (4-1) battled through four and two-thirds innings but would be tagged with his first loss allowing five runs (four unearned) on six hits with four strikeouts.

Schirer (6-0) had his way with the Whitman lineup, striking out seven hitters and surrendering just three hits in his complete-game shutout.

Despite Schirer's dominance, the Blues did put runners in scoring position in each of the first three innings, squandering a chance in the third to put the game's first runs on the board. Williams opened the inning with a walk but was thrown out trying to steal second. Alex Behrman followed up with a base hit but was subsequently picked off. Sox then doubled but would it would be all for not as Thrun flied out to end the inning.

GFU got on the board in the bottom half of the third with a solo homer from Matt Voelzke (1 H, 1 R, 1 RBI) then unloaded for four runs one inning later. A two-run triple from Colby Watilo (2-3, 2 R, 2 RBI) proved to be the big hit of the inning.

The Bruins added another four runs in the eighth inning to put the game away. Jason Garcia (1 H, 2 R, 2 RBI) uncorked a two-run homer then later RBI hits from Jerred Seamons and Jantzen Tamanaha pushed the lead to nine runs.

Whitman and George Fox play the rubber match of their Northwest Conference series on Sunday at 12:00 p.m.
