Baseball Edged By Lewis & Clark On Senior Day

WALLA WALLA, Wash. - In what proved to be a pitchers duel between bullpens, the Whitman College baseball team came up short to Lewis & Clark, falling 3-2 to the Pios on Senior Day in Northwest Conference action, Saturday at Borleske Stadium.

Prior to the game Whitman honored seniors Alex Behrman, Charlie Carmichael, Cole Edwards, Tyler Lewis, Milo Mincin, Kyle Reisman, Lucas Thrun and Jake Wishart.

Matt Sox (6-1) suffered his first defeat of the season for Blues, who yesterday nailed down a spot in the league's postseason tournament and will find out their seeding when the dust clears this evening. In five complete innings of work, Sox gave up three runs including a homer by Matt Donovan which proved to be the difference in the game.

Andrew Yarak (3-5) earned the win allowing two runs on five hits in six complete innings.

Whitman got both its runs in the first inning with Wishart (1 H, 2 R) continuing his hot hitting, putting the Blues up early with a two-run double. Behrman (1 H, 1 R) and Reisman both reached base safely before Wishart's hit drove them home to give Whitman a 2-0 lead.

The Pios manufactured a run in the third inning after Sox had retired the first two hitters. Base hits from Cooper Larson (1 H, 1 R) and Ryan Ericksen, and an RBI single from Jack Thompson (2 H, 1 RBI) put their team's first run on the board. Donovan then gave Lewis & Clark its first lead, taking Sox deep for a two-run homer one inning later.

That would prove to be all the scoring in the game. Each bullpen held the opposing hitters in check with Austin Coffman picking up the save in an inning of scoreless relief.

Whitman now looks forward to the NWC Tournament which begins this Friday, Apr. 26.
