Craven Deals, Blues Top Pacific In NWC Tourney Opener

SPOKANE, Wash. - Riding the arm of Travis Craven, the Whitman College baseball team opened its first Northwest Conference Tournament with a 7-1 win over Pacific (Ore.), Friday afternoon at Merkel Field. The win puts the Blues in the winners bracket and a Saturday matchup with host Whitworth.

Craven (5-5) tossed a beauty, working seven and two-thirds innings before being lifted in the eighth following what proved to be a too-little-too-late solo homerun from Ryan Krout. He scattered four hits and recorded six strikeouts in his seven-plus innings.

Lucas Thrun (4-5, 1 R, 4 RBI) delivered a monster performance which included a two-run homer in the ninth to all but seal the win. David Johnson had two hits, one run and one RBI including a solo homer to put the Blues up 5-0 in the third inning, with Brett Williams adding one hit, two runs and one RBI.

Craven's run support came early and often to the tune of four runs over the first two innings. Thrun and Jake Wishart (2 H, 1 RBI) both delivered RBI hits in the first with Thrun driving home his second run one inning later, scoring Williams to put Whitman up by four runs.

Pacific threw six pitchers with starter Sam Lawrence (6-3) tagged with the loss in two innings of work. Derek Ridgeway and Benson combined for five scoreless innings over the middle part of the game but Whitman had given Craven all the run support he would need.

The top six of Pacific's lineup all recorded a hit with Krout's homer the only one leading to any runs for the Boxers (24-17).

Saturday's matchup with the Pirates is slated for 10:00 a.m.
