Women's Lacrosse Takes Down UPS On Senior Day

WALLA WALLA, Wash. - In a penalty-filled and competitive game, the Whitman College women's lacrosse team dominated the first half and held on for a 12-10 Senior Day victory over Puget Sound in Northwest Conference action, Saturday at the Whitman Athletic Fields.

Prior to the Whitman's final home game, the Blues honored their lone senior, Chantal Arnold, for her years of service to Whitman lacrosse.

Katie Hinnen scored a game-high three goals with Arnold posting two goals and an assist. Sage Ali added two goals but was forced to the bench late in the game after picking up her second yellow card.

Jenna Kisner, Rebecca Simon and Lauren Mastin shared team-high honors for UPS each scoring two goals.

Piper Spencer and Anna Cadigan split time in goal for the Blues (8-4, 6-2 NWC) with Spencer starting and playing the first half, posting five saves and giving up one goal. Ally Benko made 12 saves in a full game for UPS (7-6, 5-5 NWC).

With little in the way of scoring through the first 15 minutes, the Blues started to distance themselves in the latter stages of the period. Ali and Olivia Engle both scored to put Whitman up two goals, then the pair each added another inside of the final four minutes to help the Blues carry an 8-1 lead into the break.

The Loggers would start finding the back of the net in the second half. Hinnen scored for the Blues only 22 seconds into the half, but UPS netted three of the game's next four goals to cut into the lead. The Loggers came storming back with four straight goals to cut the advantage to 11-8 with 12:33 to play.

Arnold scored with just under 10 minutes to play to push the Whitman lead to four, but goals from Kisner and Simon shaved the lead to only two. Time would not be on UPS's side though as the Blues were able to run the clock down and hold on for the win.

The game was the first of three straight for Whitman, now traveling to McMinnville, Ore. for a Sunday match against Pacific. Start time is set for 4:00 p.m.
