Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Women's Volleyball Swept By Pacific (Ore.)

WALLA WALLA, Wash. - Elyse Benavides posted a match-high 11 kills, Claire McCarthy added 10 digs but it came in defeat as the Whitman College women's volleyball team fell in straight sets to Pacific (Ore.) in Northwest Conference play, Saturday night at the Sherwood Center. Set scores were 25-22, 25-17, 25-16.

Jordan Zweifel led the Boxers (10-4, 4-0 NWC) with 10 kills and Haley Walz added a match-best 15 digs. Benavides did her damage hitting at a solid .313 clip and while adding seven blocks.

The Blues (0-10, 0-4 NWC) nearly pulled off a victory in the opening set, holding a late one-point lead before watching Pacific run off three straight to close the set. Whitman opened winning five of the set's first six points on kills from Benavides and Emma Anderson. The Boxers got it going and the two teams engaged in an ultra competitive first set. Pacific took a 20-16 lead but, on the heels of two kills from Ava McCabe (7 kills), evened the match with a 4-0 run. The Blues took a 22-21 lead but couldn't see it through and dropped the opening set.

Whitman was competitive again in set two but a mid-set Boxer run did the Blues in. They trailed by only a point at 11-10 but saw Pacific win eight of the next nine to take a 19-11 lead. A pair of Zweifel kills spearheaded the big run. The Boxers kept the Blues at bay the remainder of the set and cruised to the two-set lead in the match.

The Blues battled in what proved to be the final set but couldn't stop Pacific from closing out the match. Whitman was in the hunt early and trailed by only one point off block assists from Anderson and Sophia Dominitz (5 kills, 3 blocks). Pacific would then start to take control. A pair of Ivkovic kills sparked a 4-0 run and later another four-point spurt put the Boxers up 18-11.

Whitman continues Northwest Conference play when it travels to Linfield next Friday, Oct. 4. First serve is set for 7:00 p.m.
