Blues Fall to LC State, Whitworth At Whit Classic

Match 1
Whitman's season opener turned out to not be a pleasant one as the Blues (0-2) dropped a three-setter to an experienced and seasoned Lewis-Clark State College squad in the first match of the Whit Classic, Saturday at the Sherwood Center. Set scores were 25-12, 25-12, 25-14.

Brooke Kaaawa did the damage for the Warriors (7-5) with a match-high 14 kills, six service aces and seven digs.

The Blues showcased a balanced attack but hit .160 compared to LC States's .340 attack percentage. Christina Boxberger and Taylor Knight both posted a team-high eight kills with Elyse Benavides adding seven more.

Claire McCarthy added a team-high 12 digs with Emma Anderson posting 11 assists.

Match 2
Whitman retook the court for the final match of the Classic but ran into a buzzsaw against a Whitworth team riding from a win over Lewis-Clark State. Whitworth took it to their Northwest Conference rival and swept the Blues 25-15, 25-21, 25-15.

Christina Boxberger and Elyse Benavides were the top hitters for the Blues, recording eight kills while also equaling a team-high of two blocks. Emma Anderson ran the offense to the tune of 12 assists while also posting eight digs.

The Pirates saw some impressive performances in collecting their second win of the day. Kiana Vandaele posted a match-best 14 digs with Emiko Kohler adding a match-high 14 kills to go along with nine digs.

Set one saw an even game early with an 8-8 score. That's when Whitworth (5-1) would take control, reeling off seven straight to go up 15-8. Whitman hung around and shaved the deficit to two points late but Whitworth scored the set's final eight points for the win.

Set two featured a tight contest before ending in another Whitworth win. Leading by as many as four points in the later stages of the set, the Blues looked to pull even. However, an 8-0 Whitworth run reversed the lead and the momentum of the match.

Whitman heads back out on the road this week. The Blues travel to Indiana for the DePauw Tigers Invitational and matches against Alma, DePauw, Westminster and Aurora.
