Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Men's Basketball Takes Down Willamette In NWC Action

WALLA WALLA, Wash. - Andrew Vickers scored 27 points, Trevor Osborne added 23 more and the Whitman College men's basketball team remained perfect in league play, taking down Willamette 121-79 in Northwest Conference action Saturday at the Sherwood Center.

For the second straight day, the Blues dominated their opponent from early on in the game and on both ends of the court. Whitman turned 21 Bearcat turnovers into 34 points while committing only nine of its own. The Blues shot 45% in three pointers added by Vickers and Osborne who nailed 12 triples between them.

The Blues' bench outscored Willamette's by 30 mainly due to the hot shooting night from Osborne. Weston Crump contributed 10 points with Brian Warinner adding six points and four rebounds.

Cade Whicker led the Bearcats (1-12, 0-4 NWC) with 22 points and Daniel Plumer added 19.

Whitman was hot from the get-go, scoring on its opening four possessions to build an 11-3 lead just 1:52 into the game. Vickers, Osborne and Nikola Trifunovic all hit from beyond the arc to give their team the early lead. Unphased though, the Bearcats worked themselves back into the game. Daniel Plumer's layup capped a quick 6-0 spurt to make it an 11-9 score.

The Bearcats made it all the way back when Ben Sutton's layup tied the game up at 21-21 midway through the half. Whitman responded in a big way, reeling off 12 straight points capped by a Weston Crump three-pointer to extend the lead to 38-25 with 6:38 to play in the half. The lead continued to swell as Jaron Kirkley's late buckett sent the Blues into halftime up 61-40.

The Blues kept their foot on the pedal as the second half started. Osborne converted a four-point play after hitting a three pointer and getting fouled by Whicker. He connected from distance two possessions later and the Blues had a 70-48 lead with 17:13 to play.

The lead never fell below 20 from that point on as the Blues won going away. A 10-0 run midway through the second half put the game to bed. Vickers heated up, nailing three three pointers in 67 seconds to push the lead to 85-55.

The Blues play their first conference road games next weekend when they visit Pacific (Jan. 17) and George Fox (Jan. 18).
