Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

No. 12 Blues Too Much For Willamette, Remain Perfect In NWC

WALLA WALLA, Wash. - Makana Stone scored a game-high 19 points, Mady Burdett added 16 more and a Northwest Conference women's showdown proved not to be as the No. 12 Whitman College women's basketball team overwhelmed Willamette 74-54 on Saturday night at the Sherwood Center.

Largely attributed to a tenacious Whitman defense, Willamette (9-4, 3-1 NWC) shot just 33% from the floor in dropping its first NWC game. The Blues (12-1, 4-0 NWC), on the other hand, shot at a 44% clip and 50% in three pointers. Both teams demonstrated a quality defensive prowess, but it were the Blues who turned their defense into offense in scoring 23 points of 16 Bearcat turnovers.

Kassin Hopkins and Sammi Riggs led the Willamette effort, each scoring a team-best 10 points with Riggs adding seven rebounds.

The opening period belonged to the Blues. Kaelan Shamseldin scored on a layup then drained a three pointer, forcing Willamette to call for time trailing 7-2. The momentum stayed with the home team as Burdett hit from distance out of the timeout and Whitman led 14-4 with 3:31 to play. The Bearcats worked themselves back into the game but a Taylor Chambers three pointer helped carry the Blues into the second quarter with a 12-point lead.

Whitman kept up the pressure and sustained a double-digit lead throughout the second quarter. Burdett's early three pointer put the lead at 14 points, Whitman's largest of the game to that point. The Blues closed the quarter playing stellar ball on both ends, holding Willamette scoreless for the final 2:54 and pushing the lead to 19 points by halftime at 43-24.

The Blues blew the game open early in the third quarter as they opened up 24-point lead on back-to-back jumpers from Burdett and Natalie Whitesel. Defense was on display as well, as Whitman held Willamette scoreless for a 3:05 stretch and set the stage for an easy fourth quarter. Coach Ferenz worked in her bench that final period as the Blues won going away.

The Blues play their first conference road games next weekend when they visit Pacific (Jan. 17) and George Fox (Jan. 18).
