Women's Tennis Tops UPS In NWC Opener

Box Score TACOMA, Wash. - The Whitman College women's tennis team served up its Northwest Conference season in style, taking its first step toward a league title with an 8-1 win over Puget Sound on Sunday.

The Blues (4-1) set the stage for the dominant win with a doubles sweep. Irene Tsai and Angel Le opened with an 8-3 victory at the two before Camilla Tarpey-Schwed and Jennifer Wong topped Zoe Love and Avery Honaker 8-3 on the No. 3 court.

Whitman's No. 1 team of Andei Fukushige and Andrea Gu assured the Blues of the sweep, taking down the Logger pair of Lisa Owen and Bridget Myers, 8-3, at the one.

The Blues nailed down the win with wins on the No. 1 then on the No. 2 courts. The top doubles pair picked up where they left off as Fukushige topped Owen 6-2, 7-5 at the one, then Gu swept Myers 6-1, 6-0 to clinch the win. 

Also winning singles matches for the Blues were Tarpey-Schwed at the three, Tsai at the five and Wong on the No. 3 court.

Whitman retakes the court next Saturday, Feb. 22 with a neutral site contest against Portland State. First serve is set for 9:00 a.m.
