Women's Volleyball Competitive In Loss To Loggers

WALLA WALLA, Wash. - Kenzie Martinez provided the offense for the Blues, drilling a match-high 16 kills but it wasn't enough as the Whitman College women's volleyball team fell in four sets to Puget Sound in Northwest Conference play on Saturday night at the Sherwood Center. Set scores were 25-19, 25-27, 25-20, 25-19.

Martinez added nine digs for a near double double with Brooke Valentine leading with the Blues (4-11, 2-4 NWC) with 17 digs and Emma Anderson adding 13 more.

Jordan Holman led the Loggers with 13 kills and Samantha Johnson added a match-high 23 digs.

The Loggers opened with a comfortable set one win. Back-to-back kills from Katelyn Chekian helped UPS open up an 8-3 lead and, later, a Katherine Carley kill extended the advantage to 13-6. The Blues put together a late 6-0 run but it proved to be too late.

The Blues came alive in set two to even the match. UPS scored the first two points of the set but Whitman responded with a 10-1 run to take a commanding lead. Sydney London later delivered a kill then won five straight points off her serve as the Blues were off and running. Whitman continued to lead but a UPS run shaved its deficit to only one point at 14-13. Whitman kept it together and, on the heels of kills from Anderson and London, extended the lead to 21-15. Closing the set would not be easy as the Loggers rallied to take the lead, but Whitman finished the job and evened the match.

The second set Whitman win proved to be just a hiccup in an otherwise solid win by the Loggers over the Blues. The final two sets were competitive but clear wins for UPS who closed out the match.

The Blues will have a short week before traveling to Whitworth for a match against the Bucs on Wednesday, Oct. 6.
