Women's Volleyball Falls In Four Sets at PLU

TACOMA, Wash. - Kenzie Martinez posted a double double with 11 kills and a team-high 14 digs, but it couldn't stop the Whitman College women's volleyball team from falling in four sets at Pacific Lutheran in Northwest Conference play on Friday night. Set scores were 25-23, 21-25, 25-19, 25-11.

Christina Boxberger delivered a team-high 12 kills for the Blues who easily could have held a two-set lead over the powerhouse Lutes, but let the opening set slip away. Sophia Dominitz dominated the net to the tune of a match-high five blocks but, as a team, Whitman (6-16, 4-9 NWC) hit only .093 for the match.

For the Lutes, Mckenzie Pfeiffer drilled a match-high 15 kills with Halle Hetzler adding a match-best 21 digs.

The Blues rallied from an early set one deficit and led late, but couldn't hold on for the win. Down four points early, Boxberger drilled a pair of kills to help tie the score, then kills from Martinez and Nicole Kelly gave Whitman its first lead. Kelly later served an ace to put Whitman up four points but the Lutes responded with a 5-0 run to take a 20-19 lead. Whitman went on a quick three-point burst to go up two points, but down the stretch it were the Lutes who closed on a 4-0 run to take the opening set.

Whitman responded nicely and evened the match with a solid set-two win. The Blues scored the first five points on the strength of back-to-back Boxberger kills. Kills from Martinez and Sydney London helped Whitman maintain the lead, but the tides turned after PLU reeled off seven straight points capped by a Baylee Johnson kill to take a 14-11 lead. The Blues saw PLU's bet and raised them, winning nine of the next 10 points to grab a 20-15 advantage. The Lutes threatened late but Whitman held on to even the match.

The Blues opened up strong in the third set in their bid to take the lead in the match. They went up 9-2 but the home team had a response, a 14-3 run that put momentum on PLU's side and gave them a 16-11 lead. Kills from London and Dominitz cut into the lead late, but it wasn't enough as the Lutes pulled away. With momentum completely on PLU's side, set four was a walkover as the Lutes completed the four-set win.

The Blues play their road finale on Saturday with a visit to Puget Sound. First serve is set for 6:00 p.m.
