Women's Volleyball Falls To George Fox In Straight Sets

WALLA WALLA, Wash. - Christina Boxberger posted a match best 11 kills, Tate Cadang equaled a match high of 16 digs, but it couldn't stop a sweep at the hands of George Fox as the Whitman College women's volleyball team fell 25-22, 26-24, 25-15 to the Bruins in Northwest Conference play on Saturday night.

The win lifts the Bruins to 5-2 and 1-1 in conference as Whitman drops to 2-9 and 0-2 in league play. Bailey LeBreton led Fox with nine kills and three blocks. Sophia Lawrence added 16 digs.

The opening set saw a mid-set run from George Fox do the Blues in. Back-to-back kills from Boxberger and Sophia Dominitz cut the deficit to 16-15 but the Bruins responded with four straight points. Caitlin Nemecek's kill was followed by a Sophia Davies ace which put their team up 20-15.

Whitman let one get away in set two after looking prime to even the match. After falling behind early, a pair of kills each from Boxberger and Megan Suka spearheaded a 6-0 run as Whitman looked sharp early. Later, solo blocks from Dominitz and Kenzie Martinez extended the lead to 14-8. Dominitz added another block but the Bruins responded with a 7-0 run to take a 20-19 lead. Whitman staved off two set points but ultimately saw itself fall into a two-set hole.

Set three belonged to the Bruins who scored 11 of the frame's first 12 points. The Blues slowed the momentum but ultimately the deficit proved to be too tall of a mountain to climb.

Next up for the Blues are their conference road openers. Whitman faces Willamette on Friday, Sept. 24 and Linfield on Saturday, Sept. 25.
