WALLA WALLA, Wash. -
Nicole Kelly and
Kenzie Martinez each posted a double double and the Whitman College women's volleyball team ran its win streak to three matches and evened its league record with a 25-23, 19-25, 28-26, 25-19 win over Pacific in Northwest Conference, Saturday night at the Sherwood Center.
Kelly posted 13 kills and a match-high 18 digs with Martinez delivered a match-best 15 kills to go along with 12 digs for the Blues who moved to 6-9 overall but more importantly brought their NWC record to .500 at 4-4.
Alison Brown delivered a team-best 14 kills for the Pirates (7-7, 3-5 NWC) and Shaianne Cambra shared match-high honors with 18 digs.
Whitman struck first with a first-set win. The Boxers did hold an early lead however as Brown's kill helped them to a 9-5 lead. The Blues then took control and carried that momentum to a set one win. Christina Boxberger highlighted a 5-0 run with a pair kills, then later added another to give Whitman a 19-15 lead. Kills from Kelly, Sydney London and Teia Magaoay late in the set sealed the win.
Whitman's set two loss proved to be just a blip in an otherwise solid performance from the Blues. Set three was an exciting one as the Blues trailed much of the set, rallying to push it into extra points and grab the lead in the match. Trailing by five late, Whitman ran off four unanswered to shave the lead to one point. Kelly's kill staved off a Boxer set point and Whitman closed by winning four of the final five points.
The Blues took care of business in set four, gradually pulling away to capture the four-set win.
Whitman continues its homestead next weekend with matches against Puget Sound and Pacific Lutheran.
