Women's Tennis Falls To Whitworth In NWC Semifinals

McMINNVILLE, Ore. - With aspirations of a tournament title, the Whitman College women's tennis team came up short in a 6-3 loss to Whitworth in the Northwest Conference Tournament semifinals on Saturday afternoon.

The shorthanded Blues were without several of their top players but nearly pulled out the win. Whitman fell behind by two points after doubles losses on the No. 2 and No. 3 courts. The tandem of Arianna Castellanos and Camilla Tarpey-Schwed kept their side in the match however. They topped the Pirate team of Aleah Kert and Hannah Plank, 8-5, to salvage a point heading to singles.

Tarpey-Schwed picked up where she left off and tied the score with a 6-1, 6-0 sweep of Plank at second singles to tie the match. Castellanos then gave the Blues the lead after an equally dominant performance. She took down Kert on the No. 1 court 6-0, 6-1 and the Blues led 3-2.

Castellanos' victory would be the final one for the Blues on the day however. After Zoe Zapf and Piper Rylander lost at the six and four, respectively, Thorp was unable to hold a one-set lead on the No. 3 court and fell 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 to Gracie Smyley for the match clincher.

Whitman returns to the court for its season finale this coming weekend. The Blues will host Lewis-Clark State on Friday, April 29 at 3:00 p.m.
