Blues Impressive In Road Finale Win At UPS

TACOMA, Wash. - Kenzie Martinez led all hitters with 19 kills, Teia Magaoay added 15 digs to her match-high 40 assists and the Whitman College women's volleyball team posted with an impressive four-set, road-finale win over Puget Sound in Northwest Conference action on Saturday night. Set scores were 25-22, 17-25, 25-13, 25-20.

Nicole Kelly added 15 kills and Bella Vickers chipped in a match-high 21 digs for the Blues (5-16, 4-10 NWC) who returned the favor after a straight set loss to the Loggers (14-8, 7-7 NWC) at home last month. Katelyn Chekian led UPS with nine kills and 15 digs, and Samantha Keightly added a team-best 20 digs.

Whitman came out strong in delivering its set one victory. Kelly and Navi Islam-Zwart both had a pair of kills as part of a 6-1 run to open the set. The Loggers maneuvered their way back and nipped on Whitman's heels most of the set. Late in the frame, however, Martinez drilled three kills as part of a 4-0 run to seal the win.

The Blues posed little challenge in set two, but regrouped for a dominant set three win. Kelly drilled three early kills to help Whitman to an 8-3 lead, then later a pair of Martinez kills extended to a 15-8 advantage. The Blues would shortly after run off five straight points and take a 20-9 lead and cruise to the win.

A hot set four start by the home team showed signs of an upcoming fifth set, but the Blues rallied and took control. It was Lilli Thompson's turn on the attack as she drilled three quick kills to help the Blues take an 11-10 lead. The offense continued to click as three consecutive Martinez kills, coupled with another pair from Islam-Zwart, put the Blues up 18-13 and they never looked back. Martinez, fittingly, delivered the match-clinching kill.

The Blues close the season at home beginning with a Wednesday, Nov. 1 matchup against Whitworth. First serve is set for 7:00 p.m.
