Martinez Delivers Career High, Blues Take Down Whitworth In Five Sets

WALLA WALLA, Wash. - Kenzie Martinez drilled a career-high 26 kills to go along with 17 digs to lead the Whitman College women's volleyball team to a thrilling five-set win over Whitworth in Northwest Conference action on Wednesday night at the Sherwood Center. Set scores were 26-24, 25-19, 23-25, 20-25, 16-14.

Nicole Kelly chipped in 13 kills and 10 digs for the Blues who squandered a two-set lead and trailed by six in the fifth and deciding set. Martinez and Kelly rallied the troops, posting multiple kills down the stretch to turn the tides and deliver the thrilling victory.

Ella Jimenez shared match-high honors for the Bucs (14-9, 11-4 NWC) in kills (26) with Martinez, and Taylor Miche added a match-high 26 digs.

Whitman (6-16, 5-10 NWC) built a two-set lead despite coming out of the gate slow. Back-to-back kills from Logan Spencer and later Jimenez helped the Bucs establish a 10-point lead. The Blues finally got things rolling as Lilli Thompson posted a kill and got in on a block, but Whitworth still carried a sizable lead at 17-9. Whitman later caught fire again, going on a 6-1 run to whittle the lead to one point. Down the stretch Navi Islam-Zwart staved off a set point with a kill and the Blues sealed the win.

The Blues led from start to finish in set two, beginning with a 9-3 run to open the frame. Jimenez drilled three kills as part of a 4-0 Buc run to get her team back in the set, but Whitman responded with a 9-2 run to pull away and take a commanding two set lead.

The Blues nearly completed the sweep after holding a four-point lead midway through the set. Whitworth rallied and took a three-point lead, but Martinez helped erase it with back-to-back kills. The Pirates held on however to remain in the match.

Whitworth kept the momentum going and pushed the match to a deciding set, one where it built a five point lead at 11-5. Started and finished by Kelly kills, Whitman reeled off five unanswered points to come within one point. A Cassidy Franklin kill later gave the Pirates match point, but the Blues closed the match on a 5-1 run to complete the thrilling win.

Whitman concludes the season on Friday, Nov. 3 against Linfield and will honor its three seniors with a special ceremony prior to the match.
