Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

No. 22 Women's Basketball Upsets No. 7 Wartburg

Gallatin, Texas - In a result that will be sure to send shockwaves throughout the DIII basketball landscape, the No. 22 Whitman College women's basketball team delivered a convincing upset win, resoundingly beating No. 7 Wartburg College 85-51 at the Music City Classic on Tuesday afternoon.

The game was the first between the two teams since Whitman's upset NCAA second-round win at Wartburg (9-1) only days before the NCAA canceled the tournament due to the COVID-19 outbreak.

The Blues (9-1) dominated the paint to the tune of a 38-20 point advantage and were lights out from three point land, shooting 47% (11-23) for the game. Five players connected on multiple three point attempts including Carly Martin who also shot 7-14 from the field for 17 points. Korin Baker led all scorers with 18 points and, with Natalie Lundberg, grabbed a game-high six rebounds.

Jaedan Murphy and Britney Young scored 13 and 11 points, respectively, for the Knights who suffered their first loss of the season.

The Blues were in attack mode from the beginning and outscored Wartburg 25-9 in the opening quarter. Whitman opened the game on an 11-2 run highlighted by a pair of buckets from Baker and two back-to-back makes from Lindsay Drango. Chrsitiane Carlisle and Martin both followed with three pointers to help their team to a 17-4 lead with 3:39 to play.

Baker's bucket midway through the second quarter extended the Whitman lead to 17 points, but Wartburg made an attempt to chip away at the lead. Young scored back-to-back baskets, the second off a turnover, to highlight a 14-4 run for the Knights and whittle the deficit to 10 points. Young hit from distance late in the quarter but Baker's basket as time expired helped Whitman take a 40-28 lead into halftime.

Whitman blew the game open in the second half. The third quarter saw the Blues double up the Knights in the scoring department headlined by a 10-2 run midway through the period. Avery Neal's three pointer capped the burst and extended the lead to north of 20 points for the first time. The Blues exited the quarter with a flurry of points, hitting three shots in the final 48 seconds including Jordan Leith's buzzer beater three in transition to close the period.

The fourth quarter proved elementary, but still saw the Blues play lockdown defense and hold the Knights to only nine points for the second time.

Whitman closes the Music City Classic against Christopher Newport on Wednesday, Dec. 20. Tipoff is set for 9:00 a.m. PT (11:00 a.m. CT).
