Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

No. 22 Women's Basketball Comes Up Short To No. 3 Christopher Newport

Gallatin, Texas - Korin Baker matched her season high of 30 points on an efficient 14-17 shooting, but it wasn't enough as the No. 22 Whitman College women's basketball team came just shy of another upset in a 70-61 loss to No. 3 Christopher Newport on Saturday in the final day of the Music City Classic.

Lindsay Drango chipped in 13 points and matched Baker with a game-high seven rebounds as the Blues (9-2) nearly pulled off wins over Top 10 opponents on back-to-back days.

Both teams showed similar production on both sides of the ball but it were the Captains who had more scorers. Alivia Giles posted team-highs of 19 points and six rebounds, and Hannah Kaloi and Camille Malagar both chipped in 17 points.

The Blues looked sharp in the opening quarter which included a 9-0 run beginning at the midpoint of the period. Baker scored all nine points, including an and-one three-point play to cap the run and put Whitman up 18-9 with 2:11 to play. Malagar stopped the bleeding with her bucket, but Avery Neal got her layup to go to put the Blues up 20-11 at the end of the quarter.

The wheels then came off for the Blues in the second 10 minutes. The tides turned as Whitman scored a season-low five points in the quarter while CNU put 21 on the board to take a seven-point lead into halftime. Whitman's two made baskets both came in the first two minutes and the Captains unleashed a 21-1 run in the final 8:24 of the half.

The two teams battled it out in the second half. Baker returned to form and scored 14 points in the period to single-handedly keep the Blues in the game. She scored on three straight possessions and added a pair of free throws to keep the deficit at only three points with 6:11 to play. Malagar and Giles each had a pair of buckets toward the end of the quarter, but Whitman hoops from Baker and Emmie Ogden kept the CNU lead at only seven points heading to the final period.

Whitman came all the way back in the fourth quarter spearheaded by Holly Morgan's early three pointer that whittled the lead to two points. Briana Andrade later got her jumper to go to tie the game at 54-54 with 6:05 to play. CNU pushed the lead back up to six points, but Ogden's layup and three pointer cut the lead to one point with 2:57 to play. That would be as close as Whitman would come however, as CNU hit its free throws down the stretch to pull out the win.

The Blues will have a brief respite with their next action not coming until the return to conference play on Tuesday, Jan. 2 at Whitworth.
