Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Baker Scores 1000th Career Point, No. 16 Blues Edge Whitworth

SPOKANE, Wash. - On a night where scoring was at a premium, Korin Baker delivered a monster performance. She scored a game-high 26 points which included her 1,000th career point to help the No. 16 Whitman College women's basketball team to a 58-52 win at Whitworth in Northwest Conference action on Tuesday night.

Baker also added a game-high 14 rebounds to her tally as the Blues held the Pirates to
13% (2-15) shooting and only four points in the second quarter. Lindsey Drango posted 10 points and grabbed seven rebounds with Natalie Lundberg and Carly Martin scoring seven points. Lundberg also added five rebounds and four steals to her final line.

Kimberly Dewey led Whitworth with 23 points and Zalissa Sanfo chipped in a double double with 12 points and 11 rebounds.

Despite the final score, the Blues (10-2, 2-1 NWC) led by two after a relatively high scoring first quarter. Baker had her shot working early, scoring three of her team's first four baskets to put the Blues up 11-8 with 6:34 to play. Dewey later nailed a three pointer then connected on a jumper to tie the game with just under three minutes to play. Baskets by Jordan Leith and Drango inside the final minute gave the Blues the lead after one quarter.

Whitman outscored Whitworth 16-4 in a dominant second quarter. The Pirates hit only two shots and Whitman lifted its lead to as many as 16 points. Lundberg's three pointer early in the quarter upped the lead to seven points, then Baker hit back-to-back shots to make it a 28-19 game with 6:09 to play. Lundberg's jumper put the Blues up 35-19 with 1:29 remaining and Whitman cruised into the halftime with a big lead.

The second half saw the Pirates chip away at the lead but ultimately unable to make it all the way back. Martin's three ball extended the lead to 17 points early in the third quarter, but back-to-back jumpers by both Dewey and Sanfo helped shave their deficit to 11 points by the end of the quarter.

The game tightened in the final quarter as Dewey's three pointer midway through the period shaved the lead to three points, but timely Whitman shots down the stretch kept the Pirates at arm's length.

The Blues are next in action on Saturday, Jan. 6 at Lewis & Clark. Tipoff is set for 4:00 p.m.
