Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Men's Basketball Notches Impressive Win Over No. 24 Wisconsin-Oshkosh

WALLA WALLA, Wash. - Grant Hunt, Jai Deshpande and Jander Cline all chipped in a team-high 13 points to lead the Whitman College men's basketball team to an impressive, hard-fought 68-60 win over No. 24 Wisconsin-Oshkosh on Saturday night at the Sherwood Center.

Points were hard to come by all night as both squads brought an excellent defensive effort, but it was late offense and lock down defense late that propelled the Blues to the win. Ale Efe Isik added eight points and seven rebounds, and Alex Pape contributed quality minutes off the bench to the tune of nine points and five assists.

Carter Thomas led the Titans with a game-high 14 points and a team-best six rebounds.

The game featured a three-point shooting spree early. Quinn Steckbauer and Thomas hit from three on back-to-back possessions, but Deshpande and Hunt did the same for Whitman who led 9-7 with 15:33 to play.

Pape later converted an and-one three point play to put Whitman up, but the lead changed hands on multiple occasions throughout the first half. Efe Isik broke an 18-18 tie when he got his jumper to go, but UWO responded with eight unanswered points to go up 26-20 with 5:06 to play. Whitman righted the ship down the stretch and sent the game into halftime deadlocked at 30-30.

The second half saw the Blues go up by double digits but the Titans rally to regain the lead. Deshpande's dunk and Hunt's triple highlighted a 12-2 run that put Whitman up 51-41 with 9:08 to play. Hoping to put the game away down the stretch, the Blues instead saw UWO go on a 14-2 run. Three pointers from Thomas and Reed Seckar, and later a bucket from Reed Gunnick put the Titans up 55-53 with 5:41 to play.

Isaiah Amato then came alive, draining a key corner three pointer then sinking a jumper to put the Blues back up. Pape later wowed the crowd with an up and under layup to keep the lead at three points before the Blues locked in and closed out the win.

Next up for the Blues is a home game against Misericordia on Thursday, Dec. 21 at 1:00 p.m.
