McMINNVILLE, Ore. - The Whitman College women's tennis team looked impressive against a solid Linfield team, blanking the Wildcats 9-0 in Northwest Conference play on Friday at the Rutschman Fieldhouse.
The whole team fought so hard," said head coach John Hein. "It was huge to get up in doubles at 1, then Teleya and Jin played great but the big one was Camilla and Ilina coming back from 4 match points to force a tiebreaker and give us a huge 3-0 lead. We were able to carry the momentum in singles and get a great win for our program against the defending conference champs."
Doubles competition was no walk in the park but the Blues (3-3, 2-0 NWC) emerged with all three victories. Arianna Castellanos and Angel Le won 8-3 at the one over Lexie Matsunaga and Allena Wong, but courts No. 2 and No. 3 were a fight to the finish. Jin Yu and Teleya Blunt won a tight match at the two, then the aforementioned rally on the No. 3 court clinched the doubles sweep. The pair of Camilla Tarpey-Schwed and Ilina Jha took down the Wildcat duo of Alexis Garner and Sarah Forester in a tiebreaker 8-7 (7-1).
There was no let up from the Blues in singles play. Whitman won all six matches convincingly including 6-0, 6-0 victories by Tarpey-Schwed and Blunt on the No. 5 and No. 6 courts, respectively.
Whitman has a quick turnaround as it visits Lewis & Clark on Saturday for a 12:00 p.m. match.
