Baseball Drops Two Against Willamette

WALLA WALLA, Wash. - Ben Parker had a monster performance and homered in both games of a doubleheader, but it wasn't enough as the Whitman College baseball team dropped both games of a twinbill in Northwest Conference action against Willamette on Saturday at Borleske Stadium. Whitman dropped the opener 21-6 and the nightcap 8-6.

Game 1
The opener began auspiciously for the Blues who plated runs in each of the first three innings. In the first, Mateus Conaway (1 H, 1 R) singled then later scored all the way from first on an RBI double from Teague Conder (2 H, 1 2B, 1 RBI). The next inning, Jack Bickerton (2 H, 2 R, 2 RBI) ripped a solo shot, his first of two for the game, over the left centerfield fence to put his team up two runs.

Julien Hernandez was tagged with the loss after allowing six runs on six hits with six strikeouts in four and two-thirds innings. Layton Wagner struggled early but pitched six complete innings for the win, allowing five runs on six hits

In the third, with the wind starting to pick up, Garrett Runyan (1 H, 1 R, 2 RBI) gave Wagner's pitch a ride which carried over the left centerfield fence for a two-run homerun and put the Blues up 4-0.

The Bearcats responded and did so in a big way, plating eight runs in the fifth inning to take a five-run lead. Luke Werkmeister-Martin (1 H, 3 R, 5 RBI) and Drew Baskin (1 H, 3 RBI) provided the notable at bats of the inning. Werkmeister-Martin doubled to clear the bases and give the Bearcats their first lead, then Baskin scored three runs on a base hit up the middle to pad the advantage to five runs.

Willamette put the game to bed one inning later. Werkmeister-Martin drove home another run before Rocco Granucci (1 H, 2 R, 7 RBI) delivered a grand slam to put the Bearcats up 14-4.

Game 2
The nightcap began in similar fashion with the Blues scoring four early runs. Bickerton (1 H, 2 RBI) continued his solid afternoon with an RBI hit in the first inning and, one inning later, Ben Parker belted a three-run homer over the left field fence to put Whitman up 4-0 through two innings. Parker had a monster game for the Blues with a homerun, a double, three runs and four RBI.

Willamette responded with a pair of runs in the top of the fourth, but Parker kept the Whitman offense going in the bottom half of the fourth. He doubled to the centerfield wall, driving home Brock Williams (1 H, 2 R) who had reached base safely to open the inning.

The Bearcat offense kept rolling as well. Willamette manufactured a pair of runs in the fifth inning to shave the lead to one run, then took the lead one inning later on the heels of a Werkmeister-Martin (2 H, 2 R) run-scoring double.

Willamette added another in the seventh inning but Whitman had an excellent chance to tie the game one-half inning later. Kepa Supnet ran the count full with two outs and runners on second and third, but came up empty on the at bat as the Bearcats held on to their two-run lead.

The eighth inning saw Whitman scrape across a run to make it a one-run ball game, but Willamatte added to its lead one half inning later and shut the Blues down in the ninth to claim the win and doubleheader sweep.

The Blues and Bearcats concluded their series with a single game on Sunday at 12:00 p.m.
