WALLA WALLA, Wash. -
Chaney Heinbaugh scored a late game winner to lift the Whitman College women's soccer team to a 1-0 win over Pacific (Ore.) on Sunday in the inaugural game played on Hayner Field.
"I'm so proud of our team," said coach Michelle Voiland. "What a great way to open up our home conference play with a big win on our new field. The team maintained their composure and we were finally able to break them down. A great ball from Lise (Arrouye) and an amazing finish from Chaney (Heinbaugh). Such a wonderful victory.
The win keeps the Blues among the leaders in the Northwest Conference with a 3-1 record and 4-2-2 overall. Hannah Hagler made three saves for the Blues in a shutout performance with the Pacific combination of Kylie Pascual and Elle Hamilton posting four saves in the losing effort.
Heinbaugh's goal came in the 83rd minute as time was dwindling away. Arrouye won a challenge in the Boxer defending half of the field and took space. Drawing in the defense, she played a ball to her right just inside the penalty area which Heinbaugh ran on to and finished far post past Hamilton.
While possession often favored Pacific, the Blues had the lionshare of chances on goal. They outshot the Boxers 12-5 and nearly delivered a second and third goal in the final minutes.
The Blues return to action next weekend at Linfield and Willamette.
