NEWBERG, Ore. - The Whitman College women's tennis team opened the ITA Fall Northwest Regional Championship with a bang as nearly every participant advanced to play in winners brackets on Saturday. 

Erica Mock, Julia Longpre, Teleya Blunt and Sascha Wells all won their opening round "A" main draw singles matches and advanced to the Round of 16 set to start on Saturday morning. Seeded players Jin Yu and Illina Jha earned first round byes and will play their first matches tomorrow morning.

Longpre and Wells had the most challenging victories as both went three sets. Longpre had to rally from a set down to defeat Susanna Anand of Lewis & Clark 3-6, 7-5, 10-7.

The tournament played two rounds of doubles matches as well with three Whitman teams advancing to the quarterfinals. Jha and Wells topped Pacific and Willamette, and Jules Thompson and Grace Carter took down UPS and then Whitworth.

Yu and Blunt were dominant in their two wins, losing only a single game en route to advancing to tomorrow's quarterfinal round.

Carter, along with Kaylah Tan, competed in the B singles draw and advanced to Saturday's round of 16.

The tournament is being hosted by George Fox University at the Multi-Use Facility.
