Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Women's Basketball Falls At Linfield

McMINNVILLE, Ore. - Korin Baker and Carly Martin led the team with 18 and 15 points, respectively, but the Blues saw little production off the bench as the No. 19 Whitman College women's basketball team were upended on the road in a 51-45 loss to Linfield on Friday night.

Baker also added nine rebounds to her point total, both turning out to be game highs, but it couldn't prevent the Blues (11-3, 3-2 NWC) from posting their lowest point total of the season.

Three players scored in double figures for the Wildcats led by Miki Vermuelen's 12 points and team-high eight rebounds. Gillyn Landis and Eve Burke both chipped in 11 points.

The game was close most of the way but it was the Blues who had the advantage in the first quarter. Martin scored at the hoop on a dish from Natalie Lundberg then nailed a three pointer on the next possession to put the Blues up 9-6 with 5:03 to play. Martin added another bucket to extend the lead but five unanswered Linfield points to close the period evened the score at 11-11.

The second quarter saw Martin put the Blues up five after hitting again from distance and scoring on a layup. Vermuelen scored on consecutive possessions to cut the lead to one point, then Burke converted a three-point play to put the Wildcats up 24-22 with 2:19 to play until halftime. Amelia Solt's three pointer inside of a minute to play gave Linfield its largest lead of the game and a 29-24 halftime lead.

Whitman was unable to gain any ground in an even third quarter. The Blues trailed by as many as seven points before Christiane Carlisle began to heat up. She hit back-to-back shots including a three pointer to help her team even the game at 31-31. Linfield responded and pushed the lead back up to seven points and carried a five-point lead into the fourth quarter.

The game was for the taking in the final 10 minutes. Whitman trailed by four but, after Lindsey Drango converted a three-point play and Baker scored at the hoop, the Blues led 45-42 with 4:19 to play. Whitman was unable to score again, however, as Linfield closed the game on a 9-0 run.

The Blues will look to right the ship when they square off against George Fox on Saturday, Jan. 13 at 4:00 p.m.
