NEWBERG, Ore. - Whitman women's basketball head coach Michelle Ferenz reached yet another milestone in her storied coaching career. The longtime Blues coach reached win No. 400 as her No. 19 Blues rebounded for a dominant 74-51 win over George Fox in Northwest Conference action on Saturday.
Korin Baker led the way with game highs of 19 points and nine rebounds with three other starters posting double figures as well. Carly Martin scored 16 points and handed out four assists, and Lindsey Drango registered 13 points and seven rebounds.
Erin Yoshitake scored a team-high 12 points for the Bruins who saw the Blues (12-3, 4-2 NWC) pull away with a big third quarter on both sides of the ball. Whitman had the better of the Bruins in most offensive categories but were especially dominant in the paint with a plus-12 scoring advantage.
The offense wasn't present in Friday's loss, but arrived early and often in the first quarter of tonight's win. Yoshitake opened the game with a three pointer but the Blues responded with 13 unanswered points. Spearheaded by three straight three pointers, two from Martin, Whitman took a 13-3 lead just over the midpoint of the period. Avery Neal later scored from distance to push the lead to 11 points.
An even second quarter left Whitman with a seven-point lead to start the second half, but the Blues grabbed a stranglehold of the game with an excellent third quarter. Drango got her jumper to go and Natalie Lundberg drained a three pointer and the Blues quickly opened up a 12-point lead. The Bruins didn't connect on a shot until 5:43 remaining and would manage only seven points in the quarter. Martin's late three extended the lead to 9 points and the Blues closed out the game in the fourth quarter.
Whitman looks to keep the momentum going hosting Pacific Lutheran on Friday, Jan. 19.
