No. 21 Women's Basketball Takes Down UPS In Overtime Thriller

WALLA WALLA, Wash. - Christiane Carlisle scored a game and career high 19 points including a late three pointer to lift the No. 21 Whitman College women's basketball team to a thrilling 64-61 overtime win over Puget Sound in Northwest Conference action on Saturday night.

Carlisle chipped in 11 rebounds for her first double double and Lindsay Drango did the same with 10 points and 11 boards. Korin Baker was also a steady presence for the Blues (13-3, 5-2 NWC) who found themselves trailing by five points in the overtime session.

Sophie Nilsson led the Loggers (10-6, 4-3 NWC) with 13 points and Katie Minnehan chipped in seven points and a team-high eight rebounds.

The final moments of regulation saw Carlisle play lockdown defense on UPS's final possession, but Natalie Lundberg unable to get her running, and potentially buzzer beating, jumper to go. Before long in the overtime, Whitman trailed 59-54 with 3:36 remaining as Addison Reardon and Paige Gerhart both hit from the floor.

The Blues played lockdown defense the rest of the way as UPS never hit another basket. Drango started the run with a bucket, then Carly Martin hit an elbow three pointer to shave the lead to a single point. With 35 seconds left, Carlisle drained what turned out to be a dagger three pointer and lifted the Blues to the win.

Points were hard to come by in the early going of the opening quarter, but it were the Blues who got out to an early lead. Carlisle bookended an 8-2 game-opening run with a pair of three pointers to highlight the fast start. UPS responded with a pair of buckets but the Blues kept up the pressure as Carlisle again dialed long distance to give her team a 15-6 lead with 2:34 to play. Inside a minute, however, Kennedy Brown and Nilsson both hit from the floor to whittle the lead to six points by quarter's end.

UPS rode that momentum into the second period and cut the lead to two points. Nilsson and Reardon both hit three pointers to make it a 19-17 score with 6:25 to play. The quarter continued with even play on both sides until Nilsson and Reardon nailed back-to-back jumpers to tie the game at 26-26 with 1:16 to play as the the two teams headed to the break all even.

The Blues return to action on Sunday, Jan. 21 against Pacific Lutheran. Tipoff at the Sherwood Center is set for 2:00 p.m.
