No. 21 Women's Basketball Tops PLU: Baker, Ferenz Honored

WALLA WALLA, Wash. - Korin Baker led all scorers with 14 points, Lindsay Drango added 11 points and six rebounds and the No. 21 Whitman College women's basketball team turned back Pacific Lutheran 60-42 in Northwest Conference action on Sunday at the Sherwood Center.

It was a special afternoon for the Blues (14-3, 6-2 NWC) as the program honored both Baker and coach Michelle Ferenz. Baker became the newest member of the 1,000-point club this month and was recognized with a special pregame ceremony. Following the win, a special recognition was paid to Ferenz who won her 400th game last weekend at George Fox. Whitman College President Sarah Bolton, Provost and Dean of Faculty Alzada Tipton and Director of Athletics Kim Chandler were on hand to honor the Northwest Conference's winningest women's basketball coach.

Natalie Lundberg chipped in eight points and six rebounds for the Blues who held the Lutes to 29% shooting, the lowest of the season by a Whitman opponent. Ashley Akamine led PLU (9-8, 1-7 NWC) with team highs of 12 points and eight rebounds.

Whitman's defense was on full display from the jump. It wasn't until just over three minutes remaining did the Lutes score their first points as the Blues forced PLU possessions to go deep into the shot clock. Meanwhile, Whitman ran off 11 unanswered points spearheaded by back-to-back hoops from Carly Martin.

The second quarter saw the offense for both teams begin to click. Kasidy Javernick opened the period with a three pointer for the Lutes, but Jordan Leith responded on the next possession with a three ball of her own. The Blues pushed their lead to double digits on an Avery Neal three pointer, but Akamine responded with a hoop to make it a 21-16 score heading to the midpoint of the period. The Lutes shaved the lead to four points late, but Lundberg got her three pointer to go to make it a 26-19 score at the break.

Whitman padded its lead with a strong third quarter beginning with back-to-back layups from Baker to extend the lead to 11 points. PLU shaved the lead to seven points with 5:45 to play, but the Blues went on a 10-3 run over the remainder of the period. Eight of the points came from Baker who hit a pair of shots and connected on four free throws to put her team up 44-30 heading to the fourth quarter.

The Blues never let the Lutes back into the game in what proved to be an elementary fourth quarter.

Whitman returns to the road next weekend for more Northwest Conference action, taking on Willamette on Friday and Pacific on Saturday.
