Men's Basketball Sails Past George Fox

NEWBERG, Ore. - Jai Deshpande scored a game-high 29 points to lead six players in double figure scoring and the Whitman College men's basketball team took down George Fox 102-88 in Northwest Conference action on Saturday night.

The Blues spread the wealth to the tune of their second 100-point scoring output in the past three games. Ali Efe Isik and Alex Pape both added 19 points with Pape shooting 4-7 in three pointers, and Grant Hunt, Isaiah Amato and Jander Cline all chipped in 10 points.

Aiden Price scored a team-high 13 points off the bench for the Bruins who ran into a hot-shooting Blues team, particularly from beyond the arc. Led by Deshpande's six three pointers, Whitman shot a scorching 46% in three pointers and 54% overall.

Despite the double-digit win, it was the Bruins who got off to a fast start, connecting on their first three shots beginning with a James Moore three pointer. Whitman finally got it going as Deshpande and Hunt both dialed long distance to cut the Fox lead to 16-14 with 15:06 to play in the first half.

George Fox pushed the lead back up to eight points but the Blues quickly mounted a run to tie the game. Cline hit from the floor on back-to-back possessions before Pape nailed consecutive three pointers to give Whitman its first lead at 30-27.

As the half winded down, Cline and Pape again hit from the floor before Deshpande drilled a three pointer to extend the lead to six points with 5:42 remaining. All told, the Blues closed the half on a 22-6 run capped by a Pape three pointer to make it a 54-37 Whitman halftime lead.

Whitman continued to hold a double digit lead early in the second half, but the Bruins managed to whittle the deficit to eight points after back-to-back layups from Nick Greenwood. Pape and Deshpande quickly responded for the Blues, nailing back-to-back three pointers to bolster the lead back up to 14 points with 12:39 to play.

Whitman never let the lead slip into single digits again. The advantage went as high as 20 points on two separate occasions as the Blues coasted to the win.

Whitman looks to keep the momentum going hosting Pacific Lutheran on Friday, Jan. 19.
