Men's Basketball Cruises Past Lewis & Clark In Historic Shooting Night

PORTLAND, Ore. - The Whitman College men's basketball team saw two career highs in a historic scoring night. Jai Deshpande shot 13-15 for a career-high 35 points and Alex Pape was 8-11 off the bench with his career-best 24 points, both helping the Blues to a 114-88 win at Lewis & Clark in Northwest Conference action on Saturday night.

Deshpande and Pape combined for 10 three pointers as the Blues (8-5, 2-2 NWC) shot a scorching 60% (18-30) from beyond the arc. The 114 points was the most since the opening game of the 2019-20 season. Whitman also saw a pair of others reach double figures. Grant Hunt posted 13 points on 5-8 shooting with Ali Efe Isik adding 18 points and a team-high six rebounds.

Lewis & Clark (5-8, 1-3 NWC) saw five players score in double figures on a solid shooting night despite the loss. Isaac Ticeson, Mikey Medlock Jr. and Nate Berg all led their team with 14 points, and Griffin Datcher IV and TJ Muhammad chipped in 12 points.

The Blues dominated from the get-go as Hunt's three pointer highlighted a 10-2 game-opening run. Medlock Jr.'s bucket made it a three point game, but Deshpande then caught fire. He scored at the hoop then drained back-to-back three pointers to put his team up 18-9 with 15:03 to play. Deshpande's personal run continued as he later nailed another three pointer to put the Blues up 12.

LC whittled the lead to five points with just over 10 minutes to play, but the Blues then unleashed a 13-2 run to regain control. Later, Efe Isik scored at the hoop on back-to-back possessions, then Deshpande drained yet another three pointer to lift Whitman to a 19-point lead, the largest of the half.

Whitman lost its double digit lead for just a moment early in the second half before running away with the win. Datcher's three pointer made it a 10-point game, but the Blues took control from there. Deshpande converted a three point play, then nailed a three pointer to put Whitman up 79-63 with 12:47 remaining in the game. Sean Johnson's three ball with 8:13 gave the Blues a 22-point lead as Whitman coasted to the win.

With only one game on the schedule this weekend, Whitman will prepare for road games next weekend at Linfield and George Fox.
