Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Men's Basketball Takes Down Linfield

McMINNVILLE, Ore. - Jai Deshpande led all scorers with 22 points, Grant Hunt added season highs of 14 points and seven rebounds and the Whitman College men's basketball team topped Linfield 64-58 in Northwest Conference action on Friday night.

Isaiah Amato chipped in 12 points and six rebounds in what was a low-scoring yet efficient shooting night for the Blues (9-5, 3-2 NWC). Whitman shot 47% from the field and 32% in three pointers with its top three scorers missing only 10 shots between them.

Garrett Callsen and Joshua Ryan both led the Wildcats with 16 points. Jackson Dupree added nine points and a game-high 15 rebounds.

It was all Whitman in the early going as Hunt nailed three pointers on his team's first two possessions. Deshpande later added back-to-back buckets of his own as the Blues opened the game on a 12-0 run.

The home side arrived late but caught up quickly. A pair of three pointers from Ryan spearheaded a 14-3 run to get the Wildcats back in the game. Donovan Johnson capped the run with a made jumper as Whitman led 15-14 with 10:33 to play in the half.

The Blues continued to lead but back-to-back three pointers from the Wildcats helped them take their first lead at 22-19 with 7:08 to play. Deshpande's three pointer helped regain the lead for the Blues but Callsen got his layup to go in the final seconds to give Linfield a two-point lead at the break.

Linfield led in the early going of the second half on back-to-back buckets both from Callsen and Chase Bennett. Hunt once again dialed long distance though to even the game at 40-40 with 17:04 to play.

Neither team gained much of an advantage until Deshpande got his jumper to go to put Whitman up by six points with 10:45 remaining. Callsen and Ryan didn't let the game get away from Linfield, both hitting from the floor to make it a one-point game with just over seven minutes to play.

That would be as close as the Wildcats would get, however, as timely Whitman shots down the stretch kept them at arm's length.

Whitman will look to keep it rolling with a visit to George Fox on Saturday, Jan. 13. Tipoff is set for 6:00 p.m.
